Tired of paying hundreds of dollars for cable TV? You’re not alone. People are deserting their cable companies in droves these days. And with good reason. Cable rates have been rising about 6% per year — four times the rate of inflation! — while content remains the mostly the same.

So a lot of viewers (like me) simply cut the cable cord, opting instead to stream content over the internet. On-demand services like Netflix and Hulu are growing by leaps and bounds but many people have been waiting for the day when they can stream their favorite programs online, live. The good news is: that day is here. The bad news? It’s pretty confusing.

There’s Sling TV, which offers channels like ESPN and HGTV. Then there’s a CBS app where you can get access to live TV and your favorite shows on-demand. HBO will start offering HBO Now in April (just in time for the return of Game of Thrones). Sony’s Playstation Vue promises lots of network content, but at a pretty hefty price — about the same as cable. And then there’s Apple, which, it is rumored, intends to take over TV completely.

So want to cut the cord but not sure what to do next? First, get yourself a good digital antenna for your TV. Second, do your research on all the services available and pick the one that offers more of the content you want to watch. Third, just do it. Call your cable company and cut the cord. You’ll never look back.

See you next week,
Bobby
