On April 6th, 1933 people lined up for hours at the doors of their favorite bars waiting for the official end of Prohibition. And two new holidays — New Beer’s Eve and New Beer Day — were born.

It’s rumored that even President Roosevelt was waiting patiently for the end of the law that had stopped legal alcohol from flowing in the United States. As the story goes, at 12:01am the President said, “I think this would be a good time for a beer.” So Anheuser-Busch sent their Clydesdale-drawn carriage, laden with cold beer, directly to Roosevelt.

At the end of the prohibition, it’s estimated that Americans drank 1.5 million gallons of legal beer in the first 24 hours!

So how to ring in New Beer Day? Throw a party featuring your favorite beers. Or visit a pub and suck down some suds that never would have existed in a place that never would have existed if President Roosevelt hadn’t put an end to Prohibition and let the beer flow once again!
